Severe weather spotter training courses beginning soon

While winter weather has been absolutely relentless across north central Wisconsin this month, it’s never too early to start thinking about severe weather. National Weather Service meteorologists from Green Bay, La Crosse, and Duluth will be making stops all around north and central Wisconsin during March and April offering a free 1.5-2 hour training course to anyone who is interested in becoming an official Skywarn weather spotter. You’ll learn how to identify and report severe weather such as large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. These courses are open to the public with no registration required, except for the Rhinelander spotter course, which you need to contact the EM office at 715-361-5167 to register.

Monday March 11th: Wautoma  6 p.m.  209 S St Marie St., Courthouse Demo Room #1

Wednesday March 27th: Waupaca  6 p.m.  811 Harding St, County Courthouse Lower Level Room 0042

Tuesday April 2nd: Phillips  Time and location TBD. Click here for time and location updates.

Thursday April 4th: Rhinelander  6 p.m. 2000 E Winnebago St, Community Room (contact the EM office 715-361-5167 to register)

Thursday April 4th: Ashland  6 p.m. Northland College, 1411 Ellis Ave S, Larson-Juhl Center for Science and the Environment

Monday April 8th: Black River Falls  6:30 p.m.  N7261 Warrior Road, Ho-Chunk Nation District Community Center 2nd Floor

Wednesday April 10th: Medford  6:30 p.m.  845 E.Broadway St, Taylor County Multipurpose Room

Monday April 15th: Adams  6:30 p.m.   Adams County Community Center Room 145B

Tuesday April 16th: Wisconsin Rapids  6 p.m.  2410 48th St S., Grand Rapids Fire Dept

Wednesday April 24th: Park Falls   1 p.m.   400 Fourth Ave S., City Hall

Wednesday April 24th: Phillips   5 p.m.  104 S Eyder Ave, UW-Extension Conference Rooms A and B

Thursday April 25th: Wausau  6 p.m.   518 S 7th Ave, UWSP at Wausau, Room 233 (North Hall)

Thursday April 25th: Hurley  6:30 p.m.  5708 Center Dr., Kimball Community Center

If you can’t make it to one of the in person courses, the National Weather Service in La Crosse and Green Bay will offer online webinars.

If you live in Taylor, Clark, Jackson, Juneau, or Adams counties, the online webinars will be offered at 1 p.m. on March 20th, and 7 p.m. on March 28th, but you must click here to register.

If you live in Marathon, Wood, Portage, Waushara, Waupaca, Shawano, Lincoln, Langlade, Oneida, Vilas, Menominee, Forest, or Florence counties, you’ll have to register for the online course with the National Weather Service in Green Bay, but dates and time have not yet been listed.
